So you wanna build a website. (Yay, how exciting! 🎉)

Maybe you’ve tried to do some research on ‘how to write the best website’ but ended up cross-eyed cuz it was information overload.

Your research left you confused (and with an unwelcome headache), causing you to procrastinate.

Well, I’m here to tell ya… All procrastination does is keep you from moving forward in your business.

Been there, done that. The good news is, you didn’t let that stop you. You’re here, and you’re ready to take action. (Whatever that means. 😅)

I know you want to generate more revenue and elevate your online presence. And you know there’s no better way to do that than having a website—YOUR website—show up on Google.

There’s just one little hiccup. You’re not entirely sure what to do next… But, you know what?
That’s okay. Your next step might look like hiring an expert to represent your brand clearly and effectively to attract the right people.

The key to quality website copy

Words are the most difficult part of a website. (Or anything, really.)

Not only do you have to grab someone's attention, you have to KEEP it. Otherwise? They bounce. This means knowing what to say and how to say it.

You can be clever but not confusing
↳ Professional, but not boring
Meaningful, but not sappy

Your writing and formatting have to accommodate readers with different desires. The skimmers who just want the quick and dirty details, and the diggers who don’t miss a single word.

Feels daunting, doesn’t it?

Maybe you’ve tried writing in the past but kept getting stuck in that dreadful 'type and delete' cycle. (Starting to seem like a copywriter is your get-out-of-jail-free card?)

To write quality website copy, copywriters speak to your ideal client and appeal to their emotions. To do that, they need to answer these
two questions:

  1. Who is my target audience?

  2. What’s the goal of my writing?

Who’s my target audience?

Ever read something online and thought, “How’d they know that? It’s like they read my mind.” That’s EXACTLY the vibe your website needs.

If you’re speaking to everyone, you’re speaking to no one. To speak directly to your audience, you need to appeal to one person at a time.

So, let’s say you’re in a long-distance relationship, writing a love letter to your partner. You want to make them feel close to you even though you're 800 miles away. To write an effective love letter, you need to know
personal details about the recipient. (Aka, your audience.)

⇝ Same goes for your website ⇜

To write quality website copy, you need to know WHO you’re writing to. This is the person that comes to mind when you think of your dream client or customer.

You need to identify their:

  • Pain points: What problems are they experiencing, and how can your product or service solve them? Ex: postpartum hair shedding and thinning.

  • Desires: What do they want? Ex: fuller, thicker hair.

  • Fears: What are they scared of? Use this to overcome objections. Ex: If they’re worried about wasting money on something that doesn’t work, ease their concerns with reviews and testimonials. Pair that with a low-risk/high-reward offer (like hassle-free returns within 14 days) so they feel confident in their decision.

Once a copywriter has knowledge of the target audience, their copy will build a bridge of trust with the ideal customer by making them feel seen, heard, and understood. Trust is what turns hesitation into action.

What’s the goal of my writing?

In other words, what action do you want someone to take before they leave your website?

In the copywriting and marketing world, we like to call this a “call to action,” or CTA. Every visitor should know
exactly what to do from the moment they land on your site, (typically in the form of a button).

Maybe you want them to invest in your 6 month coaching course. Your CTA could be,
Your 1:1 Coaching Sessions Are Just a Click Away.”

Sprinkle a few CTA’s throughout your website in
relevant places. They need to be obvious enough to guide visitors all the way to ‘check out,’ but not so obnoxious they’re clicking off your page within seconds.

Copywriting isn’t just about informing your audience with features, facts, and figures. It's connecting with them and building a relationship with the benefits of your product or service.

In a nutshell? Your copywriter becomes your brand. And with a bit of research, they’ll produce quality copy, taking your business to the next level.
This strategy allows you to simplify the customer acquisition process and generate more revenue while doing less work.

Copywriting and SEO

Goodness. I’m imagining what you must have been thinking the first time you heard the term Search Engine Optimization or “SEO.” It probably went a little something like…

What?? Man, I am in WAY over my head.

I can imagine cuz I felt the exact same way.

There are a lot of layers to SEO, so if not explained well, it can make you wanna hide from Google and give up on your dreams of ever showing up on the first page. 😅

But don’t panic. We’re gonna break this down so you can see just how sexy the relationship between copywriting and SEO really is.

What’s SEO?

You know all the results that populate when you Google something? Those top 5 to 10 unsponsored results have GREAT SEO.

Copywriters will implement strategies to boost a website’s Google ranking so it’ll organically populate higher up on the totem pole.

The ultimate goal?
Showing up on the
first page in the top 5

The closer to the top, the easier it is for people to find:
➔ you
➔ your website
➔ your business

Google helps you gain leads, and your website copy turns them into loyal customers. But to attract the right people, you need to know what your ideal customers are typing into Google.

Copywriters conduct keyword research to find JUST the right words to use throughout a website to grab the attention of their target audience.

Google is a great tool for this, but one of my favorites is
Ubersuggest. It’ll give you an overview of a specific keyword so you know just how easy (or hard) it would be to rank for that keyword. (AND how many people are typing those words into Google.)

If you can find a word that’s easy to rank with and has a lot of searches, this is
keyword gold.

Now, this isn’t a perfect science. Yes, doing research can help you rank higher if you know what your audience is searching for. But at the end of the day, everyone’s out here just taking their best guess.

So, to avoid getting lost down the rabbit hole, knowledgeable copywriters will choose a few keywords and take actionable steps. (Basically, they don’t dilly dally and
get to writing!)

These keywords are used in many places on a website:

➣ the body
➣ headings
➣ meta descriptions
➣ alt text
➣ the FAQs section
➣ AND MORE

So, how do I make Google happy?

The sooner you publish your website, the sooner you can build your relationship with Google. The next step is registering your website so Google can index you.

Google’s friends (the bots) will comb through all the pages of your website and find how relevant your content is.

Over time, your ranking will improve as the SEO techniques you’ve implemented throughout your website do their job.

And if you’d like to see how your website is performing, you can do an SEO website audit with
Ubersuggest. This will give you suuuper helpful info so you can boost your SEO score and rank even higher.

A copywriter is the best investment

While website copy can be challenging, it can also be fun! (For a copywriter, anyway.)

If writing your website seems stressful and you get nauseous just thinking about it, I suggest outsourcing.

Your website is an extension of your brand. You only get one first impression, so why not make it a good one? The best way to do this is by hiring an expert who can execute your vision.
